Where I’m From by SHAN Wallace

Art in Praxis commissioned award-winning visual artist, photographer, and educator SHAN Wallace  to repurpose + reimagine the traditional yard sign as public art + strategy for belonging. Where I’m From, is a creative response to the impact of multiple pandemics on a city in recovery; renewing a sense of connection amidst an altered relational landscape. In the ways large-scale public art creates a sense of place, SHAN’s signature collage style, scaled at 24 X 18 inches, tells community stories, and invites passersby to honor their own.

Where I’m From celebrates and meditates on Baltimore’s public history, evolving culture and collective memory.

About SHAN Wallace

“I am constantly filling myself up with feelings and perspectives and real stories of this city.”

SHAN Wallace (b. 1991) is a nomadic award-winning visual artist, photographer, and educator from East Baltimore, MD.

She is inspired by the nuances of day-to-day life; not as fixed narratives but as a multiplicity of experiences. It was in Baltimore where she learned about the importance of service, the power of collaboration and the impact of social change. Now, she uses her lens, collage and in situ installations as the basis of her work, demonstrating the cultural and political narratives of black life, confronting oppressive politics and histories within communities of the African diaspora, and challenging ideas surrounding existing collections, culture and archives of Blackness.

SHAN has received widespread support from publications like The Daily Beast, Essence Magazine, Black Entertainment Television (BET), the Washington Post, the Baltimore Sun, the Baltimore City Paper, VICE, Red Bull Amaphiko, The Charlotte Observer and The New York Times.

She has exhibited work internationally in galleries and museums including The Baltimore Museum of Art, The Annenberg Space For Photography in Los Angeles, CA, Elsewhere museum in Greensboro, NC, the New Gallery of Modern Art in Charlotte, NC, the Mariano Arts Center in Havana, Cuba and Maryland’s the Reginald F. Lewis Museum, The Contemporary and Prince George’s African American Museum and Cultural Center.
